BOTOX and Fillers
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. It has been used safely by ophthalmologists for more than 15 years as a form of wrinkle therapy with no serious side effects.
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections (Botulinum toxin, in small amounts) target the muscles that produce wrinkles, making them temporarily inactivate. This effectively causes frown lines, laugh lines and crow’s feet to diminish or disappear altogether, while injections near the eyebrow or corners of the mouth can produce a temporary brow lift or lip lift.
It may take up to 14 days after the injection to notice the wrinkle smoothing effect, and the results typically last for between three and six months. Patients may return for follow-up treatments after the desired effect of a treatment has lessened.
Complications from BOTOX® injections to the upper eyelid include occasional bruising from the injection, and a temporary lowering of the eyelid, which rarely occurs after frown line injection. BOTOX® is used in extremely small amounts and is delivered by the physician to localized areas. Patients may return to their normal routines almost immediately.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (www.plasticsurgery.org) has additional information on BOTOX® and the parameters for its safe, effective use.
Juvéderm May Be the Solution for You
Juvéderm™ is the #1 doctor recommended facial filler in Canada and North America. It is a smooth, replenishing injectable gel filler that your cosmetic doctor uses to refresh your appearance by smoothing away unwanted lines and bringing back the natural contours of your face.
The exclusive formulation of Juvéderm™ uses hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring sugar found in your body. It combines with the water in your skin to instantly smooth lines and wrinkles, enhance lips, and restore lost volume to the cheeks and jaw-line. In fact, hyaluronic acid facial fillers can even naturally stimulate collagen production in your skin.
The History of Hyaluronic Acid
In the 1930s, researchers discovered a natural substance in the body that they named hyaluronic acid. They found that it played a key role in numerous areas of the body including the maintenance of skin volume and hydration. In the early 2000′s, Health Canada and the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first hyaluronic acid facial filler for the correction of facial wrinkles and folds. In 2004 Heath Canada approved Juvéderm™. Today, hyaluronic acid-based facial fillers are the fastest growing non-invasive aesthetic procedure in North America.
Juvéderm™ is made of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and retains water under the skin to smooth away lines, restore lost volume and maintain skin hydration. In fact, hyaluronic acid can absorb more than 1,000 times its weight – acting like a super sponge under your skin. As the skin ages and is exposed to environmental pollutants and ultraviolet rays, the cells lose the ability to produce hyaluronic acid. As a result, the skin begins to lose volume, often resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds.
Juvéderm™ achieves facial rejuvenation by replacing hyaluronic acid lost over time, smoothing lines, restoring lost skin volume, and keeping your skin hydrated. Best of all, the results are instantaneous, look natural, and last up to a year* with no downtime.
How It Works
Skin rejuvenation treatments with Juvéderm™ are quick, simple, comfortable, and non-surgical. The procedure will have you looking and feeling instantly refreshed. The treatment administered by your cosmetic doctor involves subtle and strategically placed Juvéderm™ injections under the skin to restore and boost individual facial features.
It will add volume and definition to facial features while keeping your appearance looking natural, symmetrical, and well-balanced. Whether you are interested in enhancing facial features or refreshing and rejuvenating your appearance, Juvéderm™ can be used to:
• Soften smile lines
• Restore lost fullness in your cheeks
• Enhance lips
• Contour your jaw line
The treatment is comfortable thanks to the patented formulation of Juvéderm™ XC (extra comfort) that includes lidocaine – a localized pain reliever. After the treatment, the appearance of lines on your face will be reduced, your lips will appear fuller and more defined, and your cheeks plump. You will leave looking naturally refreshed – so that everyone will notice, but no one will know!
Depending on what you want to accomplish, this simple treatment can be used for many different purposes. It can be used as a wrinkle filler, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and creases. It can also be used to restore volume in the cheeks and chin area and to enhance features such as lips and cheeks.
Refresh and Rejuvenate
Juvéderm™ can instantly refresh and rejuvenate your appearance by smoothing unwanted lines, restoring natural contours and replacing lost cheek volume. Juvéderm™ is placed beneath wrinkles and folds to ‘fill in’ or ‘plump up’ the depression. The most appropriate lines to treat with Juvéderm™ are those that are described as static lines you can see when your face is not moving (like smile lines). The most commonly treated areas include smile lines (or nasolabial folds), mouth lines (or marionette lines), smoker lines (or vertical lip lines), cheeks or chin.
Juvéderm™ injections can also be used as facial fillers to enhance some of your facial features, such as lips and cheeks. With subtle and strategically-placed injections, Juvéderm™ will contour and define lips and cheeks, at the same time keeping your appearance natural-looking, symmetrical and well-balanced.
Why Choose Juvéderm?
Juvéderm™ is a safe and effective nonsurgical option for refreshing your appearance. Currently, there are several varieties of facial fillers on the market, but the patented formulation in Juvéderm™ offers you the following facial rejuvenation benefits:
• Smooth, natural looking results. Juvéderm™ contains a smooth consistency gel. Unlike other hyaluronic acid (HA) facial fillers made of granular bead-like gels, the smooth formulation of Juvéderm™ provides results that look and feel very natural.
• Clinically proven to last up to a year with a single treatment.*
• Comfortable treatment experience. Juvéderm™ XC (Extra Comfort) contains lidocaine – an effective localized pain reliever. This formulation provides an injection experience that is gentle and comfortable, so you can feel good during and after treatment.
• Immediate results. Juvéderm™ provides an instant improvement in the areas treated. Most patients require only one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing or volume enhancement.
• Quick and easy procedure. Unlike a face lift, Juvéderm™ is a non-surgical, healthcare professional-administered treatment that can generally be performed in only 15 to 60 minutes (depending on the areas treated) with minimal recovery or downtime.
• Reversible and biodegradable. A further advantage of Juvéderm™ is that the treatment is reversible. If you don’t like the results, you can return to your pre-filler appearance. HA fillers are biodegradable, meaning the gel breaks down over time and disappears, unnoticed, from your body.
• Proven safe and effective. Juvéderm™ has been approved by Health Canada and is also the first HA facial filler that has demonstrated effectiveness in persons of colour.
• Applies to Juvéderm™ Ultra and Juvéderm™ Ultra Plus
Laser hair removal
What can laser hair removal treatments do for you?
Laser can remove unwanted hair faster, more comfortably and more reliably than many other methods. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair follicle without damaging delicate pores and structures of the skin. Because hair cycles through “growth” and “dormant” phases, and because during the dormant phase the follicle has no pigment, at least six treatments will be needed. Dark hair is more effectively treated, as it has more pigment than red or blonde hair. Grey hair has no pigment, and therefore cannot be treated.
How does Hair Removal with elōs DS/DSL Applicator work?
The DSL uses laser and bi-polar radio frequency energies to damage the hair follicle. This disables the follicle from growing hair, which means that gradually over several treatments, there is a permanent reduction in the amount of hair in that area.
The area to be treated is shaved. A small hand-piece, or “wand”, is placed against the skin and a burst of coolant is applied as the laser is activated. The hand-piece is repositioned and the laser is activated again. The size or the area treated will determine the number of laser pulses required.
Who should get elōs treatment for Hair Removal?
Anyone who wants a permanent solution to shaving, waxing, plucking, or electrolysis. There are few medical conditions that contraindicate people from treatment.
Laser Hair Removal versus Electrolysis
With electrolysis, the operator inserts a needle into the hair shaft with the intention of reaching the follicle, then sends a small electrical charge designed to ablate the follicle. The operator then removes that particular hair with a tweezer. Hair removal is much faster with a laser as the laser is pulsed about once per second across the surface of the skin. Each “pulse” of laser light disables a large numbers of hair follicles. Electrolysis operators can only treat those hairs that they can see and which they can reach the follicle through the hair shaft. A laser treats any “active” follicle, even if the hair has not yet reached the surface of the skin, or if the hair shaft is not straight.
The number of sessions will vary for each individual. During the initial visit, the laser light disables those follicles in the “active” phase of the growth cycle. Follicles in the “dormant” phase will not be affected. Since follicles cycle through “active” and “dormant” phases, additional sessions may be desired once the “dormant” follicles become “active”. For this reason, we recommend a series of six treatments.
While some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, most patients report manageable discomfort. For more sensitive patients, anesthetic creams can be applied prior to the treatment. Immediately after the treatment the skin will look pink and slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn. This will subside within an hour or two and the skin will return to normal. Occasionally, a patient will have temporary pigment changes, blistering, or scabbing. As with electrolysis, cases of scarring have been reported with laser hair removal, but these are extremely rare. A test spot is the best determinant of how each individual’s skin will react.
Latisse is a once-daily prescription treatment applied to the base of the upper eyelashes with a sterile, single-use-per-eye disposable applicator. Latisse users can expect to experience longer, fuller and darker eyelashes in as little as eight weeks, with full results in 16 weeks. To maintain effect, continued treatment with Latisse is required. If use of Latisse is discontinued, eyelashes will gradually return to where they were prior to treatment over a period of weeks to months (average eyelash hair cycle).
Lip augmentation is considered an “injectable filler” that can create fuller, plumper lips and reduce fine wrinkles around the mouth.
A single injection is usually sufficient to produce the desired result, which may be temporary, depending on the material used. Injections may need to be repeated periodically. Proper placement of the injected material is important.
What is Perlane?
Is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler that has been used to soften wrinkles and facial lines of individuals. Dr. Neda injects Perlane to the more pronounced facial folds and wrinkles such as those on the sides of the mouth. It is also a popular filler for lip augmentation, facial depressions, and facial scarring. It can be used in both men and women.
What is Perlane made of?
Perlane is made from hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance within our bodies that easily adjusts and molds to the facial contours. Because Perlane is a non animal product and does not pose any risk of allergies, no skin testing is required prior to the injection of Perlane.
How does Perlane work?
The hyaluronic acid in Perlane augments the body’s natural supply, which has become depleted with age. Dr. Neda can inject Perlane to fill up scars, lines and wrinkles on the face. Perlane is not a permanent product and is broken down in the body. A Perlane correction can remain for about 6-8 months after injection. This is a much longer period than any of the currently available temporary dermal fillers.
What is the advantage of Perlane?
Perlane not only is much safer but also lasts longer than collagen as a dermal filler.
Can Perlane be used with other products?
Yes, Dr. Neda can combine your Perlane treatment with non-surgical treatments such as Botox, or cosmetic laser.
What Areas of the Face Can Be Treated with Perlane?
Dr. Neda is uniquely skilled at performing Perlane injections to improve the contour of facial skin, decrease unsightly wrinkles, and reduce fine lines around the nose, folds, scars, and other facial skin depressions.
What conditions can Perlane be used to treat?
* wrinkles on the face
* decrease fine lines around the lips, mouth, nose and forehead
* lip enhancement
* improve the crease lines around the nasolabial area
* Chin and lip augmentation
* Filling cheek depressions
* Redefining lip border
* Softening acne scars
* Correct the hollows around the eyes
* Improve facial depressions
When can one see the effects of Perlane injection?
The benefits of Perlane treatments are immediate and usually remain after 4-8 months. Areas around the lips and chin may require more frequent touch up every 4-6 months, whereas other areas of the face may remain wrinkle free for 6-8 months.
How long is a treatment?
Dr. Neda can perform your treatment in 30 minutes or less.
Is there any allergic test required?
NO. There is no allergic testing required before injection. The product in Perlane is non animal and has no allergic tendencies.
How long does Perlane last?
The effects of Perlane last twice as long as collagen — up to 6-8 months.
Does one need additional treatments?
Most individuals will require a repeat session once a year.
Is the injection painful?
There is minimal pain associated with injection of Perlane. Prior to your treatment at the Shine, a topical anesthetic will be applied 20 minutes prior to the injections.
Are there Side Effects to Perlane?
Perlane is a safe product. Because it is made up of hyaluronic acid (which is also a normal component of the human nobody) the skin does not react adversely to the product. The most common side effects have been temporary redness, swelling, itching or tenderness. These side effects usually resolve in a few days.
What is the difference between Perlane and Restylane?
The major difference is that Perlane is a larger molecule compared to Restylane, because it contains more hyaluronic acid molecules. This means that Perlane can easily fill in deep skin wrinkles, scars, and creases better than restylane. Restylane on the other hand can be used to treat the finer lines.

Restylane is a clear, non-animal based gel that is injected into the skin with a fine needle to enhance skin contours and smooth lines. The main ingredient of Restylane is hyaluronic acid, a substance also naturally present in the human skin, with the important ability to attract and bind to water molecules to help maintain volume. The hyaluronic acid in your body plays an important role in the firmness of your skin, the shape of your features and the lubrication of your joints.
Injected hyaluronic acid can help correct wrinkles and enhance facial features by adding volume to the facial tissue. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is produced from a non-animal source and closely resembles your body’s natural hyaluronic acid.

Soft Tissue Fillers (including Restylane/Perlane, & Juvederm)
The aging process produces wrinkles that appear as the result of collagen and elastin fibers breaking down in one’s skin. This breakdown can also be attributed to excessive squinting, frowning and smiling. Prolonged smoking can have dramatic negative effects on a person’s skin and resulting appearance.
Our family physician practicing Cosmetic & Preventive Medecine, with over 9 years of experience will discuss the risks and benefits of all available tissue fillers and help you decide what, if any, are the options for you.
